What is Acupuncture and How it Works

Acupuncture is an effective form of medical treatment, one of the Chinese arts of medicine with thousands of years of practicing history. It involves pricking the skin with needles and is a prominent treatment option for pain alleviation and various physical, mental, and emotional conditions. Acupuncture works by inserting needles in selected acupoints in the channels of the body, stimulating the body surface to produce a series of physiological reactions to replenish Qi, the vital energy of the human body. Replenishing Qi restores and maintains the internal balance of the body to heal and treat disease. The therapeutic effect of acupuncture depends on the initial functional status of the patient’s body. Therefore, treatment will be specific to the patient’s individual needs to adjust their body to equilibrium. Once the body is in equilibrium, its therapeutic effects will not continue, thus the claim that it has ‘no side effects’.
